Big balls are a match for giant Hakka sausage

Giant egg roll sausage and pork balls

Despite skyrocketing food prices and grumbles over the 6% GST, most Sabahans can’t break their habit: a hearty breakfast of noodles in a coffeeshop. I must admit I’m one. And we are spoilt for choice. Most of the time we ask ourselves in frustration: “what to eat?” (in Manglish).

Thanks to kkmoi.com we found Ho Yuan Restaurant, tucked away in a corner of a row of shop houses behind the Cempaka Club at Taman Hiburan, off Jalan Penampang.

Breakfast noodles

Its novelty is giant Tsun Ken, roughly translated into “egg roll” from the Chinese Hakka dialect. But that is a misnomer. It’s really pork sausage wrapped in a skin made from eggs.

The Tsun Ken is tasty and crunchy and you can buy a foot long for RM11.50. So are its big pork balls.

With wheat or rice noodles to go with in a bowl of soup will cost you RM7.50, including GST. It was RM7 without the 6% tax.

Ah, you are right. The price has in fact gone up by 8 sen + 42 sen GST. And of course you know why.
